PETALING JAYA: The stint in the Singapore League (S-League), scheduled to start on Feb 9, will kick-start the national Under-23 football squad’s reboot.

The Harimau Muda A team have lost several players to M-League sides following the SEA Games success while others are now overage. This has opened up vacancies and national Under-23 coach Ong Kim Swee has enlisted five 17-year-olds for the S-League campaign.

The five teenagers – Mohammad Syazwan Tajuddin, Muhammad Akmal Ishak, Mohd Azizan Nordin, Nur Areef Kamaruddin and Mohd Firdaus Muhammad – from Bukit Jalil Sports School will form the core of the youngsters in the squad.

Kim Swee, however, warned against comparing them to wonder-kid Muhamad Nazmi Faiz Mansor.

Nazmi, who is also 17, has already won rave reviews for his maturity and eye for a goal.

“Don’t expect these boys to be as good as Nazmi. They are talented but need more time to develop,” said Kim Swee.

“I intend to give them extended playtime in the S-League to see how they progress. We are in a rebuilding process and these five will be the nucleus of the team for the future.”

Kim Swee, who initially planned to have a squad of 30 players for the S-League, said he might make do with 28 instead.

“I had shortlisted two more players but they are with their own teams in the M-League,” said Kim Swee.

“It doesn’t matter if the players cannot join us in Singapore. I’ll be happy if they play regularly in the domestic league.”

The Under-23 squad are on a two-week break and will resume training at Wisma FAM on Jan 3. They are scheduled to play a friendly against the Saudi Arabian Under-23 side on Jan 31 before meeting Bahrain in the Asian Zone Olympic final round qualifier on Feb 5.

Safee risks FIFA ban

PETALING JAYA: National striker Mohd Safee Sali risks being banned if he continues to play in the unsanctioned Indonesian Super League (ISL). And the FA of Malaysia (FAM) will not be able to do anything about it.

FAM general secretary Datuk Azzuddin Ahmad said yesterday they would have to comply with whatever decision taken by the world body, FIFA.

Last Friday, All-Indonesia Football Association (PSSI) president Djohar Arifin Husin had said that FIFA had banned the ISL and that the ban extended to all players, officials and referees involved in the league.

Safee, who plays for Pelita Jaya FC, faces an indefinite ban which could cost him his place in the national team.

“We will abide by FIFA’s ruling as they are the international governing body and their decision is final,” said Azzuddin.

“Safee will have to face the consequences if he continues to play in the ISL, and that could jeopardise his future. As a professional, I hope he knows what’s best for him.”

Safee moved to Pelita Jaya in February after helping Malaysia win the AFF Suzuki Cup for the first time last year.

The former Selangor striker has become a big hit in Indonesia, scoring seven goals in 14 matches to help Pelita Jaya finish 12th in the 15-team league.

Safee admitted that he is worried but will leave it to the club management to handle the issue.

“My contract with Pelita Jaya ends on Jan 31 and I have yet to make any decision regarding my future,” Safee said yesterday.

“The problem is beyond the players and I have a responsibilty as the captain of the team. I will honour my contract and hope for the best.

“I have received several offers to play in foreign leagues in Asia and Europe, butI’m leaving my options open until my contract ends. I really hope the problem between ISL and PSSI is resolved soon.”

AFC officials to inspect Terengganu stadium facilities

KUALA TERENGGANU: Asian Football Confederation (AFC) officials will be in Terengganu to inspect facilities at the Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah Stadium next February before the AFC Cup kicks off.

Terengganu Football Association (TFA) vice-president Sheikh Tajudin Sheikh Yusoff said several areas in the stadium were being upgraded to ensure the smooth running of the competition.

“There are no major problems, except for the floodlights’ brightness. I believe the Kuala Terengganu City Council, as owner of the stadium, will do something to protect the image of the state,” he added.

Sheikh Tajudin said the facilities at the stadium, like the changing room and the meeting room, met the AFC requirements.

Meanwhile, Terengganu’s hopes of playing night matches in next year’s M-League appeared dim as the floodlights at the stadium are said to be below the required brightness of 800 lux.

Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) assistant secretary Ahmad Fuad Daud said the readings at two of the nine spots in the stadium did not meet the 800 lux brightness. — Bernama

NSFA to FAM: Be flexible about imports

SEREMBAN: The Negri Sembilan Football Association (NSFA) have appealed to the FA of Malaysia (FAM) to “cut them some slack” over the registration of their foriegn player from Brazil.

Acknowledging the NSFA made some technical errors in signing up Marquen Nuquen Gocalves Ferreira , NSFA president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan urged FAM not to be “overly rigid” in the matter of hiring foreign players.

Mohamad said a contract had already been signed with the Brazilian and NSFA would incur financial losses if they were unable to utilise the player.

He added that the NSFA had sent FAM a letter on the appeal and were willing to pay a fine in order to use the services of Ferreira.

FAM, who have allowed M-League teams to import a maximum of two players for the 2012 season, had set Dec 8 as the deadline for registration of foreign players.

Ferreira, who had played in the J-League, was hired from a Brazilian Division Three side.

In Kuantan, FAM deputy president Tengku Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah said M-League teams should not treat hiring foreign players lightly.

He said the teams’ failure to register their foreign players because they did not meet FAM’s conditions should serve as a lesson to the them.

He added the FAM would not entertain appeals and teams who failed to register their foreign players this time around would have to wait for the next window in April. — Bernama

Malaysia now ranked 148th

KUALA LUMPUR:  Malaysia climbed seven rungs in the FIFA world rankings to end the year in 148th position.

Malaysia, 155th last month, managed to improve by playing a number of international friendly matches. However, the 148th position did not match the 138th spot they managed in March and nowhere near Malaysia’s best ever ranking of 75th in 1993. — Bernama

FAM approve 26 foreigners for M-League

KUALA LUMPUR: The Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) have approved the registration of 26 foreign players for next season’s M-League.

The state and club teams sent in 35 applications but the competitions committee, who met yesterday, only approved 26 based on the guidelines set by FIFA. Two applications were withdrawn while seven were rejected because they failed to meet the requirements.

Malaysia Cup champions Negri Sembilan were among the six teams whose applications were rejected with defender Marquen Nuquen Goncalves not eligible to play.

The other six rejected were Richard Offiong (Johor), Tito Fernando Da Silva Pinto, Tiago Lima Leal (Johor FC), Bianchi Parades Santiago (Felda United), Sergey Ivanov (Pahang) and Helmi Loussaief (Selangor PKNS). — Bernama

Baddrol eager to play in Indonesia

PETALING JAYA: International Baddrol Bakhtiar is eager to join compatriot Safee Sali in the Indonesian Super League (ISL).

Baddrol has received an offer from Safee’s club Pelita Jaya and the Indonesian club are now negotiating with the Kedah Football Association (KFA) for his release. The 22-year-old Baddrol’s contract with Kedah ends only next year.

“If it’s possible I want to play overseas to gain more experience. It’s up to the Kedah FA to decide on my transfer. If it doesn’t go through, I will stay back and help Kedah in the Super League,” said Baddrol, who helped the national Under-23 team retain the SEA Games gold medal last month.

But Kedah coach Wan Jamak Wan Hassan is not too eager to lose his captain for the Super League season, which begins on Jan 10.

“Baddrol is a vital cog in my plans for the next season,” said Wan Jamak yesterday.

“He has spoken to me about playing in Indonesia. I have advised him to think carefully before making a move.”

Fringe players to get a chance on Down Under tour

PETALING JAYA: The national Under-23 football squad resumed training at Wisma FA in Kelana Jaya on a sad note following news of the death of skipper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat’s younger brother.

Goalkeeper Khairul has been given a few days off by coach Ong Kim Swee to mourn the loss of his 16-year-old brother Mohd Amirul Izzat after a bout of high fever.

Kim Swee is preparing the side for a tour of Australia, where they will play A-League sides Sydney FC (Dec 13), Central Coast Mariners (Dec 15) and Newcastle Jets (Dec 19). The squad leave for Australia on Saturday.

Kim Swee, who has roped in six newcomers for the centralised training, said three players would be dropped from final squad for the trip Down Under.

He said he would use the tour to give some of the fringe players a chance to show their worth.

“We have a couple of players who rarely get a chance to prove themselves,” said Kim Swee yesterday.

“Quality matches against these A-League sides will enable me to evaluate them better. We will be taking 33 players and there are still a few more days before we finalise the squad.”

Midfielders Gary Steven Robbat, Wan Zaharulnizam Wan Zakaria are definitely out of the trip with hamstring injuries while Abdul Shukor Jusoh and Irfan Fazail are also doubtful.

As such, the six new faces – S. Sivanesan, Nazirul Naim Che Hashim, Mohd Ferris Danial Mat Nasir, Shahrul Saad, Nur Areff Kamaruddin, Mohd Farhan Abu Bakar – are expected to make the trip.

The tour Down Under is to help prepare the team for their remaining Asian Zone Olympic qualifiers against Bahrain at the Bahrain National Stadium on Feb 5, Syria at the Prince Mohammed Stadium on Feb 22 and Japan at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on March 14.

 The training squad

Mohd Izuan Solahuddin, Khairul Fahmi Che Mat, Nik Mohd Syahrul Azim, Syazwan Yusof, Mohd Zubir Mohd Azmi, Sharil Saari, Ahmad Hazwan Bakri, Ahmad Fakri Saarani, Gary Steven Robbat, Mohd Affize Faisal, Wan Zack Haikal Wan Noor, Abdul Shukor Jusoh, K. PETALING JAYA: Ambitious Kelantan do not intend to just make up the numbers in their AFC Cup debut next season.

Team manager Azman Ibrahim said they would be well-equipped to compete in the second-tier AFC competition as they would be fielding four foreign players.

“We began work last month and have engaged three foreign players so far,” Azman said in Seremban yesterday.

The new signings are strikers Mohd Ghaddar, 27, from Lebanon, Antwi Dennis Agyare, 18, and defensive midfielder Okine Emmanuel Ayaah, 19, both from Ghana.

The Red Warriors have also been strengthened by the return of strikers Indra Putra Mahayuddin, Mohd Norfarhan Mohd and centre-back Azizi Matt Rose, who played key roles in the side’s 2010 Malaysia Cup triumph. The trio played for T-Team last season.

Kelantan’s other notable new local signing is Azlan Ismail from Kedah.

Azman said they are now monitoring a fourth foreign player, defensive midfielder Albert Banning from Cameroon.

Kelantan, however, will only be allowed to register two foreign players in the Malaysian Super League (MSL) next season.

“We don’t want to be the whipping boys in the AFC Cup. That’s why we will be going in with four foreign players. We will have to decide which two will feature in the domestic competition,” said Azman.

Kelantan and Terengganu are Malaysia’s two representatives in the AFC Cup next year. The draw is scheduled for Dec 6.

Kelantan FA President Tan Sri Annuar Musa said they intended to raise the level of Malaysian football.

“We can’t go into the AFC Cup with a handicap by fielding only two foreign players when all the other clubs will have the maximum four. Our aim is to raise the bar and see that our clubs go beyond the quarter-final stage,” said Annuar.

No Malaysian team have got past the quarter-finals in the series. Selangor were the last Malaysian team to make an impact in the then Asian Club Championship – finishing runners-up to Hapoel Tel Aviv of Israel in the inaugural tournament in 1967.

Israel are now part of UEFA and Hapoel featured in the European Champions League this season.

Aidil eyeing third consecutive award

PETALING JAYA: Negri Sembilan defender Mohd Aidil Zafuan Abdul Razak will be eyeing a third consecutive win when the winners of the 100Plus-Astro-FAM National Football Awards are announced at the Holiday Inn in Glenmarie today.

The 24-year-old international, a regular figure for club and country over the past three years, picked up the Best Defender award in 2009 and bagged the same title last year.

However, Aidil, who had a dismal season plagued by a niggling knee injury, is keeping his fingers crossed on his chances.

“I am very happy to have won the title for the past two years but my nomination this year is much more meaningful as I have been struggling with injuries,” said Aidil, who has been representing Malaysia in various categories since he was 14.

“I hope that I have done enough to win the title this year. For me the award ceremony gives recognition to the best players in the country.”

Aidil, together with fellow international and twin brother Zaquan, won the Sukma football crown in 2004 with Negri Sembilan before being promoted to the senior side a year later.

They also won their first Malaysia Super League title the same year with Negri.

After representing Malaysia at two AFC Youth Championships, Aidil Zafuan was roped into the National Under-23 team who emerged triumphant in the 2007 Merdeka Tournament.

The Seremban lad was promoted to the senior squad in 2007 and made the team for the Asian Cup which Malaysia hosted.

“I hope that they will continue to have this award ceremony. I feel it is an important aspect for professional football in our country,” said Aidil, who played for the Negri team who beat Terengganu 2-1 to win the Malaysia Cup this year.

The nominees for the various categories this year were selected by the Super League and Premier League head coaches while the awards for the Best Football Association and Best Club will be decided by the FAM’s Competitions Committee.

Malaysia beats Indonesia in SEA Games football

Amid tight security, the Malaysian football squad returned home triumphantly via a chartered plane right after clinching the gold medal at the SEA Games.

Malaysia beat Indonesia 4-3 on penalties to take the gold in a hotly anticipated U-23 football final at the SEA Games in Jakarta on Monday night.

Malaysia's captain Baddrol Bakhtiar converted the winning penalty, while Indonesia missed two of their spot-kicks after the match had finished 1-1 after extra time.

In a game lacking quality, but packed with incident, the hosts took a deserved lead after five minutes when centre-back Gunawan Dwi Cahyo popped up unmarked at the back post to head in a corner. However, Malaysia regrouped, despite the deafening roar of the home fans, to equalise in the 33rd minute with a diving header by Omar Muhammad Asraruddin after some suspect defending by the hosts. The Malaysian team celebrating after winning the penalty shootout against Indonesia.

The game saw chances for both sides throughout the second-half, with Malaysia spurning two gilt-edged chances after sloppy defending from Indonesia's erratic backline, while the hosts had a goal disallowed. Malaysia's defence, having conceded three goals in six matches, nullified the threat of Papuan forwards Titus Bonai and Patrich Wanggai who menaced but created little in the way of direct chances.

Indonesia, chasing their first Southeast Asian Games title for two decades, had a second goal ruled out in the first period of extra time to the disbelief of their passionate home support. It was all Indonesia for the second period of extra time, though, as the Malaysians began to tire but dogged defending by the visitors took the game to penalties.

After two misses by Indonesia, Bakhtiar coolly slotted the ball into the corner of the net. Despondent fans streamed out of the stadium, aware they have two years to wait before they will have another shot at winning the coveted football gold.

SEA Games: Malaysia to take on Indonesia in football final

JAKARTA: It will be a Malaysia vs Indonesia grudge match in the SEA Games football final.

In the semi-finals at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium here on Saturday, Malaysia booked their ticket to the final, when they overcame a gritty Myanmar side 1-0 through a goal from Ahmad Fakri Saarani in the 85th minute.

Indonesia booked their spot against Malaysia with a fighting 2-0 victory over Vietnam, with Patrich Steven Wanggai scoring off a freekick in the 61st minute and Titus Bonai on target in the 89th minute.

The final, which is scheduled to be played at 8.30pm on Monday, looks primed to be an explosive affair, especially since Malaysia defeated Indonesia 1-0 in their final Group A match on Thursday.

Against Myanmar on Saturday, Malaysia looked a pale shadow of the team that stunned Indonesia on Thursday.

Myanmar looked the more menacing team in the first half, creating several good moves to trouble the Malaysian defence.

However, the Malaysians came back stronger in the second half and took the fight to the Myanmar players. And the national team were duly rewarded when Ahmad Fakri struck from close range.

The second semi-final was keenly contested with Vietnam being on top in the first half. But the Indonesians picked up the tempo after the breather. And with the rain pouring down at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Patrich’s low freekick slipped through the wall and beat Vietnam keeper Tran Buu Ngoc.

Then in the 89th minute, Bonai cut in from the right and his shot deflected off a Vietnam player and sailed into goal.

Sea Games: Malaysia 0 Singapore 0

Defending SEA Games champions Malaysia and arch rivals Singapore shared the spoils, when they played to a goalless draw in a Group A tie of the men’s Under-23 football competition at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Senayan on Monday.

National Under-23 coach Ong Kim Swee had four players from the victorious 2009 Laos SEA Games squad in the starting line-up – midfielder Baddrol Bakhtiar, defenders Mohd Muslim Ahmad, Mohd Fadhli Shas and Mohd Asraruddin Putra Omar – but his team failed to find the elusive winning goal.

Both teams dished out a lacklustre performance before some 300 fans in the stadium. There was really nothing to shout in the match except for a few  goal-scoring attempts at both ends.

Malaysian skipper Baddrol came the closest with two shots. One was saved by Singapore goalkeeper Mohd Izwan Mahbud in the 25th minute and the other – a curling shot in the 35th minute - narrowly missed the target.

Singapore forward Muhd Fazli Ayop also tested national goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat twice – with low grounders in the 12th and 40th minute. Both were easily handled by Khairul.

In the second half, Baddrol had the best chance to steal the winner, when his first-timer from a corner-kick missed the target by inches in the 83rd minute.

Malaysia will play fancied Thailand next on Wednesday.

Khairul eager to relive fond memories at hostile Senayan

The Gelora Bung Karno Senayan Main Stadium in Jakarta has a feared reputation. In fact, it was once deemed a “high risk” venue by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) due to crowd violence. But for national goalkeeper Khairul Fahmi Che Mat, the Senayan Stadium is his favourite hunting ground. “I have fond memories of the venue from 13 months ago. It was there that I became a national hero when I saved a penalty en route to the team’s victory over Indonesia in the Suzuki Cup Asean Football Federation (AFF) championship,” Khairul said before the national Under-23 squad left for the SEA Games in Jakarta yesterday. Khairul, then a rookie in the senior squad, made heads turn with his heroics when he stopped Firman Utina’s spot kick in the 19th minute in the return-leg of the final. Malaysia, who had won the home-leg 3-0 at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil, lost the second leg 2-1 to lift the Cup 4-2 on aggregate. Khairul said even though the Indonesian fans were hostile he was cool and composed. “It doesn’t matter who we play, the important thing is for the players not to be intimidated by the fans. “We played infront of a hostile crowd of about 100,000 that day. Even though we lost the second-leg, we emerged champions and trooped out with our heads high. “Now, it is time for us to defend the SEA Games title. “Of course, we are in a killer group but we have to be positive. Nobody gave us a chance to become champions in the Suzuki Cup. Remember we lost badly to Indonesia (1-5) in the opening game but we went on to lift the Cup. “Every match is crucial and we have to start with a win against Singapore in the opening game “The trick to playing at Senayan is to settle down quickly and get going,” added Khairul. “Some may fear the venue but I will always have a good feeling playing in Senayan.” Malaysia have a tough draw in Group A, pitted against Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia and hosts Indonesia. Group B comprises Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, Philippines, Timor Leste and Brunei.

Kedah midfielder Baddrol to wear skipper’s armband

Baddrol Bakthiar has been named the captain of the national Under-23 football team for the SEA Games in Jakarta. Team manager Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin said the Kedahan has been given the skipper’s armband as he had been with the team since they won the gold medal at 2009 Games in Laos. “It is an important role for Baddrol because he won the gold medal with the team. I hope he will be able to guide the team with the same winning mentality in Jakarta too,” said Hamidin.

Baddrol, an attacking midfielder, has vast experience and was also with the Kedah team who won the back-to-back treble under former coach Mohd Azraai Khor Abdullah in 2007 and 2008. Baddrol, who started with the national Under-20 squad, is noted for his powerful long range shots.

Hairuddin scores winner to land a third straight Malaysia Cup medal

Hairuddin Omar scored a spectacular scissor-kick goal four minutes from time to give Negri Sembilan a dramatic come-from-behind 2-1 win over Terengganu in a pulsating Malaysia Cup final at the Shah Alam Stadium last night.

Mohd Ashaari Shamsuddin had given the east coast side the lead in the 59th minute but Negri’s nippy winger S. Kunalan equalised with a curling shot in the 81st minute.

Then, with four minutes on the clock Hairuddin, who is noted for his headers in front of goal, stunned the 80,000 capacity crowd with a scissor-kick strike.

Negri skipper Mohd Shukor Adan orchestrated the move with his precise passing and Hairuddin made no mistake as he tucked the ball away from the outstretched hands of Terengganu custodian Mohd Sharbinee Allawee.

It was unfortunate for Terengganu not to cap their season with the most prestigious silverware after having won the FA Cup and finishing runners-up to neighbours Kelantan in the Super League.

Terengganu coach Irfan Bakti even said they would win last night’s final when he said that “this is the season for Terengganu” after their Herculean efforts to beat Kelantan (5-3 on aggregate) and 32-time winners Selangor (4-1 on aggregate) in the quarter and semi-finals respectively. But it was not their night.

Negri coach Mohd Azraai Khor Abdullah will be proud of his senior citizens especially skipper Mohd Shukor, centre-back Norhafiz Zamani Misbah and the hero of the night Hairuddin – all in their prime of their playing careers.

The only thing missing from the pulsating opening half was the goals.

Negri dominated the procedings and won most of the possession in midfield with the fleet-footed Terengganu boys surprisingly reduced to just counter attacks.

The spotlight was on Negri’s targetman Hairuddin Omar, whose best chance of the half came in the opening 47 seconds of the match when he missed a sitter in front of goal with only Terengganu goalkeeper Mohd Sharbinee Allawee to beat.

Hairuddin with eight goals in the Malaysia Cup, six from headers, was heavily marked last night.

Still they could not prevent him from scoring the winner which was his third consecutive goal in three Malaysia Cup finals. He scored for Negri in 2009 when they beat Kelantan and then for Kelantan in 2010 when they beat Negri.

Terengganu were unable to dish out their smooth flowing attacking game with playmaker Joseph Kallang Tie and Reeshafiq Alwi unable to get their act right.

Hotshot Abdul Manaf Mamat had the best chance when he broke loose into the box but his shot was denied by the woodwork in the 23rd minute.

Lanky Mohd Ashaari Shamsuddin provided some anxious moments for the Terengganu fans with his strong runs and even came close with a shot at goal which Negri goalkeeper Mohd Farizal Marlias saved in the 21st minute.

Negri’s speedy flankers S. Kunalan and Shahurain Abu Samah were a menace in the Terengganu half creating the openings through their darting runs.

It was Terengganu’s baby face asssassin Mohd Ashaari who drew first blood when he latched onto Abdul Manaf’s pass to whip the ball past Negri goalkeeper Mohd Farizal in the 59th minute.

All of a sudden Terengganu had fresh legs and they kept Negri pinned in their own half but Negr’s persistence paid off as Kunalan stunned the crowd with a left-footed cross which sailed into the net beating an off-guard Terengganu goalkeeper Mohd Sharbinee in the 80th minute.

Then, it was Hairuddin’s, also fondly called “Hai O”, turn to make it a memorable night for Negri in the 86th minute. The goal also delivered the third consecutive Malaysia Cup winners’ medal for Hairuddin.

Terengganu: Mohd Sharbinee Allawee, Reeshafiq Alwi, Joseph Kallang Tie, Abdul Hadi Yahya (Ismail Faruqi), Mazlizam Mohd (Helmi Remeli), Mohd Zubir Azmi, Mohd Marzuki Yusof, Ahmad Nordin Alias, Abdul Manaf Mamat, Mohd Ashaari Shamsuddin, Mohd Faizal Mohd.

 N. Sembilan: Mohd Farizal Marlias, Norhafiz Zamani Misbah, S. Kunalan, Mohd Aidil Zafuan, Shahurain Abu Samah (Mohd Firdaus Azizul), Abdul Halim Zainal, Mohd Shukor Adan, Qhairul Anwar Roslani, Idris Karim, Hairuddin Omar, Irwan Fadli Idrus

Manaf ready to beat the odds again

Abdul Manaf Mamat  is used to staring at adversity – and overcoming it.

When he was a child, he was diagnosed with asthma.

“People told me not to pursue a football career because of my condition,” he said.

Luckily, he stubbornly refused to listen to them nor give up on his hopes of becoming a footballer.

“I have always wanted to become a football player and I admired all the top international players, such as Manchester United wingers Ryan Giggs and David Beckham,” said the 24-year-old Terengganu striker who is preparing with his team for the Malaysia Cup final against Negri Sembilan on Saturday.

“But the condition made it harder for me to realise my dream.”

He said that condition only spurred him to work harder on his skills and it paid off when he was selected to play for Terengganu in the 2006 Malaysia Games (Sukma).

He then went on to represent Malaysia in the 2009 Laos SEA Games, helping the team win the gold medal.

Just when things were looking good for the youngster, tragedy struck.

His father, Mamat Mahmud, 73, died of stroke on Oct 14 – a day before Terengganu were to meet Kelantan in the Malaysia Cup quarter-final, second-leg match.

Instead of sitting out the match in grief, he chose to play on.

“I had to rush back to Kuala Terengganu for my father’s burial. Then, without sleep or food, I went back to Kota Baru for the match that night,” he said.

And he played an instrumental role in helping Terengganu to a 2-2 draw, which gave the Turtles a 5-3 aggregate win.

“My father would have wanted me to play, so I did,” he said.

Now, he stands on the threshold of another momumental achievement as Terengganu gear up for tomorrow’s final at the Shah Alam Stadium.

And he credits his father for teaching him to always overcome the odds.

“My family, especially my father, never gave up on me, and this prompted me to never stop improving,” he said, adding that his father’s advice was his main inspiration.

“He always told me to give 110%, no matter what the circumstances.

“My father will always be in my heart and I will be playing for the team and for him in the Cup final.”

It will be a fitting tribute indeed if Abdul Manaf can help the Turtles lift the Cup again after they last won it 10 years ago.

Turtle fans fuming over ticket fiasco

Hundreds of football fans here were left fuming and disappointed as some 30,000 Malaysia Cup final tickets were “sold out” in a matter of minutes yesterday.

A check by The Star at the Terengganu FA office revealed that fans, who had been queuing up since 8am, left empty-handed as the tickets were said to have been “sold out”.

Fans here were told that they could purchase the Cup final tickets for RM25 after the state government agreed to subsidise 50% of the cost of RM50 for local fans.

The subsidised cost was good news for the fans but questions remain as to how the tickets could have been sold out so fast.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Said announced on Tuesday the decision to subsidise the tickets for the sake of football fans here following complaints that the tickets, priced at RM50, were too expensive.

Terengganu FA president Datuk Che Mat Jusoh had said that some 500 tickets were distributed to each state constituency and the remainder was sold at the Terengganu FA office.

Skipper Marzuki wants to taste another Malaysia Cup glory

Seasoned campaigner Mohd Marzuki Yusof was just an up-and-coming player when Terengganu last won the Malaysia Cup 10 years ago under coach Mat Zan Mat Aris.

This time, however, the Turtles’ inspirational captain has the chance to lead his team to glory again when Terengganu meet Negri Sembilan in the final at the Shah Alam Stadium on Saturday.

He admitted that winning the Malaysia Cup in 2001 was the best moment of his football career, though he is still hungry for another title.

“This time it will be extra special as I am the captain. I am lucky to have the chance to lift the most coveted Cup in the country once more after first winning it as a rookie,” he said.

“We also have the chance to bag the double (after winning the FA Cup in June).

“It is not often that teams have the chance to play in the final. We will do our very best and fight to the end to bring the Malaysia Cup back to Terengganu.”

Commenting on current line-up of players under coach Irfan Bakti, Marzuki said he was honoured and fortunate to play alongside the likes of Mohd Ashaari Shamsudin, Abdul Manaf Mamat, Joseph Kallang Tie and Mohd Zubir Azmi.

“We have a good mix of young and experienced players in the squad. There is a good attacking flair and, as I have done all season, I will make sure the backline stays solid against Negri,” he said.

The FA of Malaysia (FAM) expect a bumper turnout of 65,000 fans for the first-ever Malaysia Cup final between Terengganu and Negri Sembilan at the Shah Alam Stadium on Saturday.

Tickets and gates committee chairman Datuk S. Sivasundaram is confident that the tickets will be sold out as both teams have a strong fan base.

“We are making early arrangements to give out 30,000 tickets to each of the finalists. They will put them on sale at their respective venues. The remaining tickets will be sold at the Shah Alam Stadium, which has an 80,000 capacity, for fans staying in the Klang Valley,” he said yesterday.

Tickets are priced at a flate rate of RM50 while that for children below 12 years old is RM5.

He said tickets would also be on sale at Gate A of the Shah Alam Stadium on match day from 9am.

Negri and Terengganu set up first Malaysia Cup final meeting in 90 years

It is a Terengganu-Negri Sembilan final.

Both teams will meet for the first time in a final of the Malaysia Cup in 90 years.

Last night, Terengganu defeated Selangor 2-1 in the return-leg of the semi-finals at the Sultan Ismail Stadium in Kuala Terengganu and advanced 4-1 on aggregate. In Paroi, Negri clinched their ticket after they edged T-Team 2-1 at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium. The Deer advanced 6-3 on aggregate.

It was massive celebrations in Kuala Terengganu and Paroi as the home fans came out in full force to lend moral support. Terengganu are now eager to lay their hands on the coveted Malaysia Cup after 10 long years (2001) while Negri will be trooping out for their third consecutive final at the Shah Alam Stadium on Saturday.

In Kuala Terengganu, Abdul Manaf Mamat killed off Selangor’s challenge after scoring an early goal in the 20th minute before Mohd Ashaari Shamsuddin rounded up the night with a brilliant half-volley strike from outside the box, which beat Selangor custodian G. Jeevanthan in the 72nd minute. Safiq Rahim scored the consolation goal for Selangor in the 88th minute

It was sheer frustration for the Red Giants as their quest for a 33rd title went up in smoke. Their season will end trophyless. But last night, they gave everything in the match but they simply could not breach the Terengganu defence marshalled by skipper Mazuki Yusof and in-form goalkeeper Mohd Sharbinee Allawee.

Selangor coach P. Maniam fielded all his attacking players – Mohd Fadli Saari, Rudie Ramli, Mohd Amirulhadi Zainal, Safiq Rahim and Mohd Shazwan Fitri – but there was no breakthrough.

It was a balanced first half with Selangor nearly going in front in the 10th minute through Fadli Saari but he was ruled offside. Terengganu then mounted their own attack with Ashaari coming close twice and Joseph Kallang Tie hitting the woodwork.

The home crowd had to wait until the 20th minute for a goal when Abdul Manaf side-stepped two Selangor defenders to score.

The Red Giants nearly equalised in the 25th minute but Terengganu custodian Mohd Sharbinee stopped Shazwan’s close range shot.

Ashaari virtually sent Terengganu to the final by scoring the Turtles’ second goal in the 72nd minute with a thunderous shot from the edge of the penalty box.

In Paroi, T-Team needed a three-clear goal victory margin to pip Negri to the final.

But all they could manage was a solitary goal through Mohd Fitri Omar in the 72nd minute but the goal failed to inspire the club side as Negri bounced back with two quick kills through Shahurain Abu Samah in the 75th minute and skipper Mohd Shukor Adan from a glancing header in the 85th minute.

There were more woes for T-Team when striker Mohd Haris Safwan Kamal was sent off for a second bookable offence in stoppage time.

Terengganu and Negri are favourites to reach Malaysia Cup final

History beckons as fancied Terengganu and Negri Sembilan are just 90 minutes away from meeting for the first time in the final of the Malaysia Cup in 90 years.

FA Cup winners Terengganu are in buoyant mood heading into today’s semi-final return-leg match against Selangor at the Sultan Ismail Stadium in Kuala Terengganu. The Turtles downed the Red Giants 2-0 in the first-leg at the Shah Alam Stadium on Tuesday.

In the other semi-final, Negri too are in the driver’s seat when they host T-Team at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi. Negri won the first-leg 4-2 on Tuesday.

While Selangor have warned that they are ready to launch the “mother of all fightbacks” against Terengganu, T-Team face an uphill task against Negri.

Even if T-Team manage to score two goals in Paroi, Negri will still go through on the away goals rule.

Fans can brace themselves for a free-flowing game at both venues because Selangor and T-Team will throw everything at their opponents.

Selangor coach P. Maniam said it would be a test of character for his men.

“We can make it happen if we put our hearts and minds to it. The players must believe in themselves. We have a plan to get the goals and I believe we can snatch it from Terengganu if the players rise to the occasion,” said Maniam, who will be counting on Safiq Rahim, Mohd Amirulhadi Zainal, Rudie Ramli, Mohd Fadzli Saari and Azidan Saruddin to get the goals.

But Terengganu are a different proposition especially as they have homeground advantage and a two-goal cushion.

Coach Irfan Bakti’s boys have been in superb form all season and they will be hard nuts to crack.

In Paroi, T-Team will have to find a new inspiration following the suspension on Indra Putra Mahayuddin. He is suspended after picking up a second yellow card in the competition.

Coach Yunus Alif described Indra’s absence as a body blow and conceded that the team’s task of overturning the 4-2 first-leg defeat against Negri would be much harder.

“Mohd Haris Safwan will be Indra’s replacement in attack. But it will still be an uphill task,” said Yunus.

Negri are all set to qualify for their third straight final. They were champions in 2009 and runners-up last year.

Coach Mohd Azraai Khor Abdullah’s men should have little problem finishing off the demoralised club side, who need to win by a clear three-goal margin to pip Negri to a place in the final.

Azraai can also count on in-form striker Hairuddin Omar, who has eight goals to his credit in the Malaysia Cup, to strike fear in the T-Team.

For the record, Negri have not lost by a three-goal margin at home this season.

Selangor are not dead and buried yet, says assistant manager

The Red Giants are confident they can “come back from the dead” a second time.

Selangor were nearly knocked out in the group stage of the Malaysia Cup competition before staging an amazing turnaround.

Now they face themselves staring at the exit a second time – after losing 2-0 to Terengganu in the semi-final, first-leg tie at the Shah Alam Stadium on Tuesday.

But the Red Giants have warned the Turtles not to write them off, yet.

Selangor will travel to the Sultan Ismail Stadium in Kuala Terengganu for the return leg tomorrow.

“We came back from the dead (group stage) once and we can do it again. Selangor are no ordinary side … we have all the ingredients in place to claim a spot in the final. I am counting on the boys to bounce back and overturn the two-goal deficit in Kuala Terengganu. I believe we can pull it off,” said Selangor assistant manager Datuk S. Sivasundaram yesterday.

The Malaysia Cup is Selangor’s last hope of getting a silverware after failing to defend the Super League crown and exiting the FA Cup in the semi-finals.

“We have said before that our target is to win the Malaysia Cup for the 33rd time. Coach P. Maniam has done well since taking over from K. Devan,” said Sivasundaram.

“The defeat to Terengganu in Shah Alam was a close one. We had our chances at goal, too. It could have been 1-2 or even 2-2. But that’s football. Terengganu were the better team that night. But there is another 90 minutes for us to change that.”

Selangor will again start without injured skipper Mohd Amri Yahyah and it will be to attacking players Safiq Rahim, Azidan Saruddin, Mohd Amirulhadi Zainal and Rudie Ramli to get the goals.

Defending champions Malaysia have been drawn in a “Group of Death” with hosts Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and Cambodia in Group A of the men’s Under-23 football competition for the Indonesia SEA Games next month.

Vietnam, who finished runner-up to Malaysia at the Laos SEA Games in 2009, have a relatively easier draw in Group B with Laos, Myanmar, Timor Leste, Philippines and Brunei. The draw was conducted in Jakarta Wednesday.

The men’s football competition will be held in Jakarta with the kick off scheduled on Nov 3.

The national Under-23 squad under coach Ong Kim Swee are currently in Hanoi for the VFF championship and will be hard-pressed to retain the title.

Thailand were a surprise casualty in the 2009 SEA Games when the squad under Englishman Steve Darby made an early exit from the group stages. The fancied Thais have dominated the SEA Games biennial football competition, emerging champions 11 times in the series since 1977.

Malaysia emerged champions after a lapse of 20 years when they edged Vietnam in the 2009 SEA Games football final (1-0).

Negri poised for third straight Cup final appearance

Negri Sembilan are looking good for a third straight Malaysia Cup final appearance after beating T-Team of Terengganu 4-2 away at the Sultan Ismail Stadium here last night.

Negri, last year’s losing finalists, got their goals through Shahurain Abu Samah (sixth minute), Hairuddin Omar (25th, 42nd) and S. Kunalan (50th) while T-Team replied through Indra Putra Mahayuddin (11th) and Mohd Norfarhan Mohd (40th).

Negri can now look confidently ahead for the return-leg of this semi-final clash at the Tuanku Abdul Rahman Stadium in Paroi on Saturday.

In a pulsating first-half yesterday, Negri went ahead after just six minutes when Shahurain finished off a neat pass from the nippy S. Kunalan with a close range shot.

However, their lead lasted only five minutes when former international Indra nodded in the equaliser off a cross by Mohd Fitri Omar.

In-form Negri hitman Hairuddin silenced the home crowd again when he slammed home a cross by skipper Mohd Shukor Adan in the 25th minute.

T-Team’s Zairo Anuar Zailani had a chance to put them level in the 34th minute but his freekick effort went wide off the left post.

The home team’s persistence paid off in an action-packed first-half when Mohd Norfarhan slotted in the equaliser in the 40th minute.

Just when everyone thought that the two teams would be heading for the break tied at 2-2, former international Hairuddin struck for the second time to give Negri a 3-2 first-half lead.

Negri picked up from where they left off after the breather to stretch their lead to 4-2 in the 50th minute – thanks to Kunalan’s clinical finish, placing the ball beyond the reach of T-Team goalkeeper Mohd Zairi Hafiezi Idris.

Indra could have reduced the deficit for T-Team with a thunderous freekick in the 80th minute but Negri goalkeeper Mohd Farizal Marlias was equal to the task, pulling off a magnificent save.

Terengganu tame Selangor in their own backyard

FA Cup champions Terengganu took a step closer to their second Cup final of the season with a convincing 2-0 win over Selangor in the first-leg of the Malaysia Cup semi-final clash at the Shah Alam Stadium last night.

Hotshot Abdul Manaf Mamat was the hero for the east coast side, scoring a brace in the first and 33rd minutes to give the Turtles a comfortable two-goal cushion for the return leg match at the Sultan Ismail Stadium in Kuala Terengganu on Saturday.

Selangor, backed by 25,000 home fans, were silenced in the very first minute when attacking midfielder Abdul Manaf – still grieving the loss of his father last Friday – took a pass from Ashaari Shamsuddin to score with a cheeky backheel past Selangor goalkeeper G. Jeevanathan.

.Stunned, Selangor doubled their efforts in search of an equaliser. However, they were let down by poor finishing.

Even their free-kick specialist Safiq Rahim suffered an off-day, sending two eff orts wide off the mark in the 13th and 16th minutes.

But Selangor slowly, and steadily, began to take control of the match as the visitors preferred to soak up all the pressure and hit the Red Giants on the counter attack.

For all their possession and domination, Selangor simply lacked a clinical finisher.

Terengganu’s game plan of sitting back and hitting on the break suited the attacking trio of Ashaari, Joseph Kallang Tie and Abdul Hadi Yahya to perfection.

A lapse in concentration by the Selangor defenders then led to Abdul Manaf shooting past the diving Jeevanathan for his second goal in the 33rd minute.

Although Selangor coach P. Maniam brought in Rudie Ramlie to replace veteran midfielder Hardi Jaafar to add more bite to their attack in the 36th minute, the Red Giants ended the first half without a goal to show for.

Selangor went all out to look for goals in the second half, leaving their backline susceptible to fast breakaways by Terengganu.

And that was exactly what happened as Terengganu beat the offside trap on many occasions only to be denied by Jeevanathan.

When the final whistle blew, the 2,500 Turtles supporters were pleasantly surprised by the two-goal win – and attractive counter-attacking game displayed by their team.

As for Selangor, their quest for a 33rd Malaysia Cup triumph is virtually up in smoke.

Skipper Amri Yahyah will be racing against time to get fit for Selangor’s Malaysia Cup semi-finals, first leg match against Terengganu at the Shah Alam Stadium Tuesday.

Amri injured his knee in the 1-0 quarter-final second leg win over Perak in Ipoh on Friday. The Red Giants won 4-1 on aggregate to reach the last four.

The 30-year-old has yet to train since the injury.

“My chances of playing is still 50-50. I really hope I can recover in time to play but if I don’t make it we still have capable players to take over,” said Amri.

“I believe we can beat Terengganu. We have good players in the team and we are equally motivated and confident after picking up four consecutive wins to make it to the semi-finals,” added Amri.

Selangor coach P. Maniam, however, is keeping his fingers crossed that Amri will recover in time for the match.

“Amri is an important player for us. If he cannot make it, we have to come out with a solution,” said the former international.

The good news for Selangor is that defensive midfielder Bunyamin Umar will be back from suspension to bolster the team.

For Maniam, he needs all his men at his disposal as Selangor go for an unprecedented 33rd Malaysia Cup triumph.

Terengganu, the FA Cup champions and runners-up in the Super League, reached the last four after a 5-3 aggregate win over defending champions Kelantan.

Selangor, however, have a good record against the Turtles this season. They drew 1-1 in Kuala Terengganu and won 3-2 in Shah Alam in the league.

“Past results mean nothing. We need to be careful as Terengganu are now full of confidence after dumping Kelantan out of the competition. They are very effective in counter-attacks so our defence have to be on their toes all the time,” said Maniam.

Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah and Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim will be present at the stadium to lend support to the Red Giants and Maniam believes it will further motivate the players to go for a win.

“The team’s confidence is very high at the moment after a string of good results. And we always play to win in front of our home crowd,” said Maniam, a former Selangor midfielder.

Meanwhile, Selangor Football Asscociaton (FAS) general secretary Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin said the ticket for the match will be on sale from 9am onwards at the Shah Alam Stadium tomorrow.

The tickets are priced at RM15 for adults and RM5 for children.

Expect more twists and turns in Malaysia Cup return leg matches

It will be a real test of character as teams battle for places in the semi-finals of the Malaysia Cup competition today.

Local kingpins Selangor, FA Cup winners Terengganu, surprise packages T-Team and Felda United hold the advantange after the first-leg matches.

But the Malaysia Cup has seen plenty of surprises before. So, don’t be surprised to see a few more twists and turns when the return-leg matches are held at the various venues today.

The east coast derby between defending champions Kelantan and Terengganu at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Baru promises to be a combustible affair as there is no love lost between the bitter rivals.

The Red Warriors will be hoping to stage one of their biggest comebacks ever as they seek to overturn a two-goal deficit after Terengganu beat them 3-1 in an ill-tempered match, which saw five red cards being flashed at the Sultan Mohd Ismail Stadium in Kuala Terengganu on Monday.

Kelantan coach Datuk M. Karathu is confident of turning the tables on the Turtles at home.

“A 2-0 win is possible,” said Karathu, who has already led Kelantan to the Charity Shield and the Super League title. The Red Warriors just missed out on the FA Cup when they lost 2-1 to Terengganu after extra-time in the final.

Terengganu coach Mohd Irfan Bakti’s men can expect a hot reception from the vociferous Kelantan fans and it will definitely be a test of character for his players to stay cool in the pressure-cooker atmosphere in Kota Baru.

“This game is all about mental strength. It is important for my boys not to be intimidated by their fans … once they let the fans get to them, it will affect them. If we can just concentrate on our game, we can win,” said Irfan.

The absence of playmaker Ismail Faruqi through suspension will be a big loss for Terengganu, although they can expect attacking midfielders Joseph Kallang Tie and Mohd Ashaari Shamsuddin to ignite the sparks. Skipper Mohd Marzuki Yusof has the toughest task as he will have to hold the backline together with goalkeeper Mohd Sharbinee Allawee.

For Kelantan, their strikeforce, comprising Norshahrul Idlan Talaha, S. Chanturu, Ramzul Zahini Adenan, Nurul Azwan Roya and Mohd Nizad Ayub, are expected to go for goals.

Perak are the other team who will be looking to overcome a two-goal deficit after losing 3-1 to Selangor in the first-leg in Shah Alam.

The Red Giants, under coach P. Maniam, have comeback from the dead once – when they overcome a horrendous start in the group stages to finally make the cut for the quarter-finals.

He wants the Red Giants, who are gunning for their 33rd title, to tread with caution in Ipoh because he knows that Perak will throw everything at them in their bid to get early goals.

“We are not going to throw away the two-goal lead because we expect Perak to come at us,” said Maniam, who is aware of the threat posed by Perak hitmen Failee Ghazali and Akmal Rizal Rakhli.

Surprise packages T-Team and Felda United, both littered with seasoned campaigners, look set to follow in the footsteps of  former champions Selangor MPPJ, who were the first club side to win the Malaysia Cup in 2003.

T-Team, under coach Yunus Alif, have the advantage after edging Sabah 2-1 in Likas .

“We have experience on our side and it is ours to lose. Sabah are a good side and can trouble us if we lose our head. We have homeground advantage and only 90 minutes separate us from a place in the semi-finals,” said Yunus, whose squad boast of ex-internationals like Indra Putra Mahayuddin, Mohd Norfarhan Mohd, Azizi Mat Rose, Rosdi Talib, Zairo Anuar Zalani and Mohd Safwan Kamal.

Felda, under coach E. Elavarasan, did well to surprise fancied Negri Sembilan 1-0 in Kelana Jaya on Monday.

But Negri coach Mohd Azraai Khor is confident his boys can get the job done in Paroi.

“Team morale is high and the players know what to do. Our opponents are a tough nut to crack at the back but we will get our act right this time,” said Azraai, who will be counting on Mohd Firdaus Azizul, Hairuddin Omar and Shahurain Abu Samah for goals.
