Underdogs tag good for the Red Giants, says Maniam

PETALING JAYA: Rookie coach P. Maniam seems to have the Midas touch.
Having helped Selangor win their last two group matches, Maniam guided his team to their third straight win when they beat Perak 3-1 in the Malaysia Cup quarter-final, first-leg tie at the Shah Alam Stadium on Monday.
The result takes the Red Giants a step closer to winning the Cup for the 33rd time.
Maniam replaced K. Devan, who stepped down in September following a string of poor performance in the Malaysia Cup.
And the new coach believes that his team are playing better because “they are under less pressure now that they are no longer the favourites”.
“Our performance has improved game by game as the players have started to click on the pitch,” he said.
“We are not the favourites any more after a slow start in the group stages. I think that took the pressure off the players and they are now playing with more freedom and enjoying their football.
“I’ve never pressured any of them to score goals and I think that has worked because now all 10 outfield players seem able to score.”
The 43-year-old Maniam feels that his players became complacent towards the end of their match against Perak, resulting in them conceding a goal and midfielder Bunyamin Omar being sent off for a second yellow card offence.
“Overall, we played well but we lost focus towards the end and it cost us a goal and a red card,” said the former international.
“We have been playing as a team in the last three games and that is the reason for our good form. I hope they continue playing this way.”
Despite the comfortable 3-1 win, Maniam believes the Red Giants will still start as the underdogs in the return leg at the Perak Stadium in Ipoh on Friday.
Perak will be bolstered by the return of skipper Shahrulnizam Mustapa, striker Akmal Rizal Rakhli and goalkeeper Nasril Nourdin following the successful appeal to reduce their suspensions.
“I have told my players to forget the first-leg score and to go into the match in Perak thinking the scoreline is still 0-0,” said Maniam.
“It will be tougher in Ipoh but I have faith in my players.”

Early goal will transform T-Team into A Team, says Yunus

KUALA TERENGGANU: T-Team will go for an early goal in their Malaysia Cup quarter-final match against Sabah at the Likas Stadium tonight.
Coach Yunus Alif said scoring an early goal would transform his T-Team into an A Team during the clash.
“We take it as a stern test, especially playing Sabah on their home ground. We will not underestimate Sabah, especially when they are playing in front of their fans,” said Yunus.
He added Sabah would surely attack T-Team’s goal from the start, thus counter attacking play will play a key part.
“We will not ‘park the bus’ but will attack as well and take every chance we get,” he said.
Yunus said the attacking combination of Fitri Omar, Indra Putra Mahayuddin and Nor Farhan Mohamad would the team’s main weapon.
“I have not finalised my starting eleven but these three will surely play as they are our key players. I want the players to stay focused as facing Sabah on their home turf will be hard.
“We must not be complacent and concede any goals,” he said, adding that scoring away goals is equally important before the return leg in Kuala Terengganu on Oct 14.
On the team’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals, Yunus said it was time for the players to prove their worth.
“We must prove to all our doubters that we have the quality to reach the semi-finals. This is the business-end of the competition and we must win to ensure progress,” he said.
Meanwhile, Sabah coach Justin Ganai said the team had a big responsibility being the sole representative of Borneo in the competition.
“On paper, I admit T-Team have the advantage based on a number of former national team players. They also won both meetings in the Super League last season but we will not be pushovers as we want a ticket to the semi-finals too,” said Justin.
Justin added that playing at home was definitely an advantage given the strong support of the fans.

No holding back Turtles have no intention of ‘parking the bus’ in Kota Baru

KUALA TERENGGANU:
Five players – two from Terengganu and three from Kelantan – were sent off in the match, which Terengganu won 3-1.
But Turtles coach Irfan Bakti knows that although they have won the bragging rights after the first leg, “we must go on and finish off the job on Friday”.
“The players showed great composure despite the very tense and rough encounter. We are glad to have scored three goals at home but there is another 90 minutes to play,” he said.
On the sending-off of five players, including Terengganu’s Ismail Faruqi Ashaari and Mohd Zubir Mohd Azmi, Irfan said he wasn’t all that surprised as “our matches have always been explosive”.
“Some of the challenges made by our players probably did not deserve the red card. But the referee had already red-carded the Kelantan players, so he had no choice (but to send our players off too),” he said.
He also praised his players for showing great guts and determination.
Irfan said that although the Turtles held the advantage going into the second-leg, he might have to rethink his strategy now that he will be missing the two key players through suspensions.
“Don’t get me wrong, we will not park the bus in Kota Baru. In fact, we will still attack with gusto,” he said.
Meanwhile, Kelantan coach Datuk M. Karathu claimed that it was the Red Warriors who dominated the game and that the turning point was the sending-off of Mohd Daudsu Jamaluddin and Shakir Shaari.
“Terengganu scored the first goal after we were down to nine men. However, we still played well and created several chances and we even scored the equaliser,” he said, adding that his players “showed great spirit despite the decisions that went against us”.
Karathu believes his men will be able to overcome the two-goal deficit when they entertain Terengganu at the Sultan Mohd IV Stadium in Kota Baru and with 25,000 vociferous fans backing them.
“We may have lost three players through suspension but we have great depth in talent. We also scored a valuable away goal, so a 2-0 scoreline will be enough for us to go through,” said Karathu.

Terengganu FA to increase ticket prices for quarter-final
KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu FA will increase the ticket prices for the Malaysia Cup quarter-final match at the Sultan Ismail Nasaruddin Shah Stadium here.
Their secretary Abdullah Salleh said tickets for the Terengganu versus Kelantan match on Monday would be raised from RM10 to RM15 for the open terrace and from RM 20 to RM 25 for the grandstand.
The decision to increase the price was made at the Terengganu FA meeting on Thursday.
Tickets will be on sale on Monday morning at the stadium.
The association has set aside 10% of the total tickets for Kelantan fans.
Abdullah also said that a meeting would be held soon to discuss security during the match.
“We urge the fans to adhere to the regulations and not bring in objects into the stadium. We want to see quality play from both teams,” said Abdullah.
Meanwhile, the Terengganu police will deploy personnel including those from the Federal Reserve Unit to maintain order inside and outside the stadium, state police chief Datuk Jamshah Mustapa said.
Police would also carry out checks on spectators to ensure they did not bring illegal items into the venue.
“I urge supporters of both teams not to engage in provocation because this could cause tensions,” he told Bernama

Joseph Ingin Tundukkan Australia

Syria U-16 Qualifies as Nepal U-16 topples
Nepal had to play against Lebanon U-16 side but as the opponent decided not to participate, Nepal played against Syria U-16 in the first match. Nepal has always under performed against the middle east side. Both Oman and Nepal had to win their second match to keep their hopes alive they had lost their previous matches. The match was very physical in nature. The match was scoreless after the first half. Oman could have easily gone ahead as they splitted the defenders witha precise through ball. But Nepalese bench were relieved as the striker missed the entire frame from a sitter.
Nepal were punished later as Nepal couldn't keep up with the pace. The ball into the six yard bounced over the Nepalese goalkeeper. The rushing ahead goalkeeper misjudged the ball. The advancing Oman player then smashed the ball into an empty net. The misery continued in the corner kick. The Oman player in the six yard box was left unchallenged as he guided the ball into the Nepalese net. The player was initially surrounded by five Nepalese players. This poor marking demonstrated that Nepalese team were unable to transfer their SAFF performance into the AFC Qualifiers. This loss meant that Nepal had lost two of their three matches and implied that the qualification was virtually over.
Nepal sits bottom of Group D and has to play against Saudi Arabians in the final match. Nepal still awaits to open their scorer's account. For qualification, Nepal need to win their opponents by huge margin and hope that Syria also beats Oman by huge margin. The points mean that none of the team had qualified but chances of Nepalese team into the finals is very much unlikely.
Nepal needs to play more for pride in their final encounter.

Beat Kim Swee
(Source: hmetro) - August 23, 2011 - national football team coach, Ong Kim Swee full waiting anxiously the outcome of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) to postpone the second match in Group C qualifiers against Syria Olympics London 23 November, the day after the SEA Games football final Indonesia
.
It is understood, FAM through the Secretary-General, Datuk Azzuddin Ahmad has contacted his counterpart in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), Alex Soosay last week to request that the date of the second match could be postponed to a later date.
This is because, if Malaysia has successfully reached the final to defend the SEA Games gold medal, it is difficult for the same squad to play against Syria the following day.
In fact, according to the rules of international soccer's governing body, Fifa each team must rest 48 hours after facing the international game.
Kim Swee said he hoped the match with Syria can be delayed after the third match against Bahrain on November 27 or at least postponed on 24 November.
"I hope the second game could be held after the match with Bahrain but if there is no other choice, I hope the game with Syria can not miss it a bit. "Of course we have to tow one of these games, we have no other choice," he contacted the Metro Arena in Slovakia today.
For AFC, change the date of the match was not a problem if the consent of both teams. This demonstrated that the Asian soccer's governing body approves the date change Bahrain and Japan match on 23 November to 22 November.
Malaysia is Southeast Asia's sole representative in the third round of qualifying play London Olympics after overcoming the initial barriers of Pakistan and Lebanon.
